Song Saturday - Triple threat

It’s a return to doing song Saturday! I mean to to do this for the last few weeks but then things happened and I got sidetracked and… well, here we are.

So from the subject this is gonna be not one, not two but three things.

So first Is Dark Divine - Make Me Disappear

So here is a new fixation which is Dark Divine and I fully blame Anthony (the singer) cause look at him. I have binged a few of their vids so could probably do a post of just them but…

This is their las test song and it’s one of those cases where I prefer the song to the video. Like I adore the song and the video does have a nice aesthetic with the atmosphere (and Anthony does look hot). But it’s also a performance vid so it’s not to exciting. There is a few shots of a giant hand so the vibe is it’s controlling Anthony like a puppet but the thing is it doesn’t work cause there’s only a handful of shots (like yes I’d like to see Anthony chained like a puppet why are you denying me this)

Second song is Micheal Clifford + Waterparks - Give Me A Break

So this was described as a ‘love letter to fanfiction’ by Micheal which sounded like an odd thing but you can see what he meant. Cause it’s a girl writing different scenarios and the boys playing them out. The vibe isn’t very serious and it is funny how every scenario (a classroom, coffee shop, doctors room, bathroom) has both romantic vibes and then Awsten killing Micheal various ways

(There is captions and I really need to read through them but I get distracted by what’s happening)

It is wild and funny at the same time. You can tell they had a good time making it. (And I love Awstens line about living freaking out).

But also damn that last scene of Awsten and Micheal kissing. Which yup, that’s definitely launched a bunch of fanfic. (And I wonder how many takes they had cause they’re clearly into it) And you know what’s wild? They’ve teamed with Wattpad to do a fic contest. I am absolutely being serious

Lastly there’s James Marriott - Something’s Wrong

So partly this is here because I’m seeing him on Monday (which is a crazy sentence) but also it’s just a crazy video. Like Something’s Wrong is my fav of the new album singles and then the video is just.

When there was pics of James and Will in cowboy get up (I’ve no idea why but I love it) people called them Brokeback Brighton which is crazy. They’re rivals in this and the rivalry between them takes over James’ focus from the person he came with (girlfriend?) and it definitely felt a few times it was going to end up going from rivals to lovers. Like there’s a few shots that has the vibe of sexual tension but they don’t even kiss (missed opportunity obviously but maybe give me a break spoiled me there). But yeah the vibes are so… I love it.

Eyes are stupid

So about a month ago ago I slept with the window open and woke up with one eye all pink and irritated. It improved with allergy pills and warm compresses and was resolved within a day so I figured allergy season and something irritated it.

Also occasionally I wake up with pain like something is in my eye, but it always resolved quickly and I figured it was just like... eye crusties or something irritating in the morning. I occasionally used drops for dry eyes and just decided it was a body thing

But in the past two weeks I noticed a significant decline in my left eye and usually my eyes get worse at a nice slow predictable pace until I'm like 'I think I used to be able to see that?' and schedule an appointment. Or I hit my usual 2 year insurance cycle.

Right now time the right eye is still fine, but the left eye is blurry at all distances, so I took myself to the eye doctor who said 1. I have dry eyes and I should be using said drops more often than 'occasionally' and 2. There is some variation on the surface of the eye that's causing the fun new blurryness and increase in astigmatism. He's not worried about it but is going put in a referral for a specialist to make sure it's not early signs of something.

The fun bit is that the eye drops and possible treatment will likely improve my prescription from the one I got yesterday, though not resolve it entirely (he was hesitant to say it's permanent, but I am expecting my eyes to just slowly degrade over my life so it's not that terrible). But I can't actually focus with one eye now and I'm getting noticable astigmatism shadows, like someone has copied an image and shifted it an inch or so with fainter opacity. Which is annoying. So I'm debating getting a cheap online pair of glasses for like however long this is going to take and then paying proper funds for actual glasses once it settles? I'm not sure.

But last night I put in special thick nighttime eye drops and woke up without pain. So now I have another step to my nighttime routine to go along with the mouthguard for teeth grinding and moisturizer to keep my face and hands from drying up and falling off, and my bonnet to keep my curly hair in some reasonable condition... *sighs*

It's Pride weekend, and I just want to go back to bed. I did not sleep well at all. First, we ate pretty heavy right before bed, and then Boodle was bing a velctro kitty. Jess was also very cuddly last night, so between it all, I had a restless night's sleep. It's okay, I just have Pride to get through. I cancelled my afternoon game, because I just couldn't see rushing from Pride, with all the traffic of the Trans Pride and Pride Block Parties as well as any No Kings rally traffic, managing to get home in under an hour (because we are 100% ubering. Parking is going to be a nightmare. This way, we can finish my shift, walk around, and then go forth and maybe grab food and then go home.

After that, I have nothing planned until it's time to make dinner. And that's just a pork loin with mashed turnips. Then, I can crash out and go to bed while Jess plays Strixhaven.

Tomorrow, I have absolutely no plans. Just going to laze around and nap, I think. I could uber down to the pride festival, or drive down to the big Greek festival, but we'll see.

I had my bimonthly performance review yesterday. As expected, I'm doing well. I had told them that I applied for the supervisor position, and there was much lamenting on not wanting me to leave, but then he said if I get the position, I should push for as much money as I could get. Then, I should wait to sign the offer until they can go to their bosses and see if they could get a counter offer.

If after all the time I spent banging my head trying to advance at IKEA, now I've got people getting into bidding war over me, I'ma laugh.

And on that note, I'm going to start getting myself together for work. Everyone have a super Saturday and be safe!

My fave is the semicolon; however, I refuse to cede em-dashes or any other punctuation marks to ChatGPT.

These attacks on the em dash — a ChatGPT hyphen? How very dare you! — have in turn blazed across social media spaces populated by the kind of folks who will tell you, unprompted, that they have a favorite punctuation mark and what it is. (It is very likely the em dash.) — https://www.salon.com/2025/06/11/ai-cant-have-my-em-dash/

Day of the Andor

I was pleased to see yesterday that Andor topped the Nielson streaming chart during its final week (for some reason Nielson ratings are delayed a couple weeks so this was only released yesterday). Even a lot of fans of the show have called it niche, something that could only appeal to a small segment of hardcore Star Wars fans but that's plainly untrue. I believe this is the first truly successful Star Wars media since the first season of The Mandalorian. You can see the difference in the way it's being talked about; it's not just a bunch of shills. Even RedLetterMedia mumbled approval for the first season.

The most interesting thing to me about the reactions to the show is that it's touching both political extremes in our notoriously politicised current era. On YouTube, the popular right-wing critic called The Critical Drinker praised the series and a left-wing YouTuber called Jessie Gender recorded a four hour analysis. Both are fairly weak as far as analyses go but, as is often the case with weak but confident analyses, they say a lot about the analysts. I continue to think Syril and Dedra are the best part of the series which has many other fine qualities and it's fascinating how both Critical Drinker and Jessie Gender discuss Syril. Critical Drinker is rapturous over the shot of Syril nearly strangling a woman for rather fishy reasons while Jessie Gender takes Syril's initial behaviour with Dedra, even long before that scene, as a sign of the fundamental need to dominate women in all men. Both reactions seemed wild extrapolations to me and I would've assumed they'd seem that way to the average viewer in saner times. But in any case, it's fascinating that the show provokes such passionate and opposite interpretations.

Maybe it's worth remembering that we all hate fascism, even as we disagree on who the fascists are.

It's hard not to see Andor's relevance to current events. How many people are recalling the Ghorman Massacre when they watch news about National Guard being called in to quell protesters in Los Angeles? And just as with the prequels, it comes from a writer not making the story an allegory of any political event, or chaining himself to a particular ideology, but simply expressing the patterns he saw presented by a study of historical events. It turns out Andor's great and popular. It's a uniquely useful piece of art.

The tourists have been coming in over the past few days, and they're all here now. My commute wasn't too badly effected, but it was a bad one for those in the library who have to take the metro actually through DC. Despite what the the parking and traffic notices the Pentagon has been sending out the past couple weeks have been trying to pretend, it's not the army's birthday they're going to be celebrating tomorrow.
My sister has outright forbidden either my mother or myself from going to the protests. She's convinced people are going to get killed. And there's a strong possibility she's right. I doubt any of the people currently swarming around DC and probably also Old Town right now would have any bones about it, if anyone dared point out of them how many people of this city they're in have lost their livelihoods these past five months. Some of them are almost certainly hoping for an excuse. I suppose they're unlikely to be on this side of the Potomac tomorrow, but even so, after getting the dry cleaning tomorrow, I may not set foot outside the house until Monday.
We are currently under a flood watch, and there's still a chance there'll be rain during the day tomorrow. Unfortunately, though, it looks more likely that'll be over by morning.

It is so early. I got up a little bit early to go fetch Friday the 13th themed donuts, and I'm kind of regretting my life choices.

Today, we shall have donuts for breakfast, and then I'm going to work, and then? Date night. We haven't decided where we're going to dinner. There's a couple of places that we're considering. It's difficult finding somewhere with good food that also doesn't require special attire. I'm not wanting to dress up. I just don't have the clothes for it. I should really consider getting a skirt or dress for that, though then I have to think about shoes. Maybe I'll just visit the mall.

Tomorrow is Trans Pride, followed by game. Right now they're callling for overcast skies with maybe a bit of rain thrown in. But only 80 degrees, which is good.

I went yesterday for my glasses, and got my new prescription. We'll see how I like the progressives I ordered. Apparently, my eyes hadn't changed much. I'm going to get a fun backup pair from Firmoo.

Of course, after the eye exam, I had the WORST headache. I was really just good to go lay down, but I walked the dog and ate dinner. I'm still a little headachey this morning, so I'm going to go take some tylenol and ibuprofen and see if we can get rid of that.

Yesterday, I also put in for a job at Hopkins. It's not in my dept, and I'm not sure I'm even going to get an interview, but I gave it a shot, and that's what matters. I'm going to let my bosses know today.

I have my one on one today, so that'll be a quick meeting. I'm a little concerned that I put my current manager in as my reference, but she's going on maternity leave soon, so I may ask her today if I should switch the email address over to one of the other supervisors.

If I were to get it, it would definitely be more money and more responsibilty, but we'll see.

Okay, and now, I go put on pants and get donuts. Everyone have an excellent Friday!

Harris Yulin

Harris Yulin, who passed away on June 10th at the age of 87, is one of those actors you're bound to have seen at some point if you regularly take in American film and television. I saw him just recently in Night Moves. A lot of people vividly remember him as the ornery judge in Ghostbusters 2. But as illustrious as his film career was, it was on television he indelibly made a mark. He played major characters on Frasier, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and The X-Files. He was on Murphy Brown, two iterations of La Femme Nikita, Kojack, Barnaby Jones, Wonder Woman, the list goes on.

For many people, judging from reactions I've been reading, his most impressive performance was on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the 1993 episode "Duet". It's one of those dream roles for an actor seeking a challenge. He played a character pretending to be another character and the effectiveness and psychological motivation for his deception were both integral to the story. He rose to the occasion and the episode remains fascinating to watch.

Such a ubiquitous actor seems like part of the bedrock of an era in film and television media. His death feels like the end of one, or part of a transition to another.

It's Friday Eve! More packages coming today. So that's fun. Yesterday a few things showed up--we got some beach towels, should we ever want to use the pool, and we got some small things from Temu. We also put together the new file cabinet/printer holder during my lunch. It's very nice. I'm looking forward to the pantry coming so we can put that together and be done with assembly for a while. I ended up going with Temu, because IKEA continues to say that there's no delivery windows. As I said, we've had really good luck with Temu for the apartment. Aside from the sofas, pretty much all the furniture is from them. We went for the "Industrial Farmhouse" look. It's very sleek and nice, black metal with a medium colored wood. I'm especially fond of our side tables and tv stand. I've posted a picture of the TV stand before I think, but here it is again:

Our pantry is also lovely, and I can't wait for it to arrive. More pictures then.

Tonight, I have an eye appointment with Warby Parker. I've never been to them before, but they're in my plan, so I will give them a shot. I've found a couple pairs of new glasses that I like, so I'm eager to get them. I think I'm going to get 2 pair, possibly one from Zenni and one from Firmoo. I'm going to try progressives, to see if I can make do with one pair of glasses for work and play. As it is, I have a pair of bifocals, and then a pair of computer glasses for middle distance. So, we'll see!

I've got one game this weekend, which is directly after I finish working at Trans Pride on Saturday. It's my oldest game, which I kind of feel is drifting to an end. It's got one more arc, and then I think it'll be done. I hate to end it, but it feels like it's coming to it's natural conclusion.

Aside from that, and Pride, I'm going out with my friend from 911 on Sunday, but other than that, not a whole lot going on.

I was hoping to have a hat in time for Pride, but things are not looking good. I may just wear a baseball hat.

Okay, time for me to get myself together. If I'm going to have someone standing close to me, I'm going to need to take a shower. Everyone have a stupendous Thursday!

It’s time for another post which, as always, is gonna be extremely random and unfocussed

First off the Clown In A Cornfield got listings posted and the Odeon in Birmingham has an earlier showing. Except it’s at the worst possible time. It’s at 12 and the signing is at 1 so there’s no way I can do it. There is a second showing… but it’s not till 8:50 and there’s no way I can stay in Birmingham until then.

However the Walsall cinema (which I pass through on the train back) has a showing at 3:30 which is much better (though annoying cause it costs more). But hopefully I’ll be able to see it.

Also good news is that we’ve got back to the American Horror Story run, yipee! We’re midway through Asylum and watched two very wild eps. Like one had an Angel of death and the next one had a murderous Santa played by Ian McShane which is a wild sentence. Honestly this show is wild because I’ve literally no idea what to expect. I do hope we can watch more, and I would like to watch the other seasons too, but the goal is definitely to finish Asylum before Tuesday. Why Tuesday? Cause a show is coming to shudder called Hell Motel and were so gonna be checking it out.

Unfortunately my eyes went completely achy on Tuesday night which is so annoying. Like it got to the point I couldn’t even look at the pad and was just lying with my eyes closed listening to an audio thing. Ugh. Thankfully it only lasted a night but still, it was annoying.

However earlier that day, and yesterday, I was finally able to sit down and finish reading The Seven Dials Mystery which was pretty good. I’m not gonna say too much about it but ai was amazed towards the end when there’s a love proposal and the guy said ‘I’d be your dog or your slave or anything’ which was a completely unexpected thing for me to read (but honestly that’s so based of Agatha to do she was truly ahead of her time).

And then in the documentary thing about her travels last night I found out she surfed?? Which is a completely wild image but I love that.

(But yeah I’m hoping to start Cards On The Table soon cause I’m so behind on the read Christie list)

Also yesterday the forbidden planet in Birmingham posted on insta the comics for the week and the next The Umbrella Academy is out?? I’d no idea, I thought it wasn’t out until later in the year. But that’s another thing to look for Monday. (And another reminder I still haven’t finished season 3 of the show which is probably bad but then again I’ve also heard season 4 is bad)

And TUA adjacent I saw an insta pic of Mikey with the rest of MCR (just their feet for some reason but) and I just know I’ll go crazy when we have new shots of Ray. I’m sorry in advance. (Also the new Three Cheers cd is out so that’s another thing I’ll be looking for).

My love of Who is slowly coming back after that disaster of the finale, thanks to listening to some audios, but I feel it’ll be a long time before I can watch stuff with this era cause it now feels so tainted which I absolutely hate. Hopefully a new Collection boxset gets announced soon to take the edge off.

(Although as I type this there’s been a notification that there’s an animated Who series in the works for a ‘pre school audience’ which… how does that even work?)

Writing has been so annoying too cause I wanna write and i have images in my head but as soon as I open the writing app I use it’s like my mind is empty. Ugh it’s so annoying.

I think that’s everything I wanted to ramble about but I’m sure, as always, that I’ve missed something.

But ugh the weather is so weird and hanging and it feels like rain and headache weather again. Bleh.

Somewhat sleep deprived, but hanging in there?

I'm still in a reading slump. It may be somewhat affected by the amount of technical information I have to read at work daily on a computer screen. Very dry technical and legal information. Things like how many cubic yards of Permeable low-density cellular concrete (PLDCC) is required for a job, and what a credit should be in cost savings for not installing that many cubic yards. Add to that contractual information, which is a lot less interesting than the technical data, not to mention editing financial documentation and legal documentation.

Yeah, that may have an effect. And it probably explains why I am doing lots of fantasy audio books. Finished Crooked Kingdom - the sequel to "Six of Crows", which was a long, but ultimately satisfying conclusion to Six of Crows. I kind of fell for Kaz Brekker and Inej. The others, I was ambivalent about. Similar to the television series Shadow and Bone, actually. Although I think it would have been better if it had just focused on the Crows. The audio book works because it has different narrators for each characters perspective in the books, of which there are eight, two villains. Some are better than others - the Inej narrator is by far the best, and I kind of wish they were reading Kaz's pov instead of the guy reading Kaz's.

Struggled to find something to follow it with. Tried Peter Watts Blindside, a sci-fi novel about a group of oddities who are sent into space to confront an alien presence. Part philosophy, part morality, part hard sci-fi. It was dirt cheap, but also hard to listen to. The Narrator is good, but it's not holding my attention. Nor did Susannah Clark's follow up her popular novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel (which I also tried to read, gave up on, and watched the mini-series instead), Piransi. What is it about? I have no idea, I gave up after two chapters. Here's what I found on Google: Read more... ) Which I guess explains why I gave up on it? My brain has no room for it.

Finally decided on Graphic Audio Dramatization of another of the Kate Daniels novels, which basically have an entire cast - it's like listening to a radio play of your favorite books. And I've forgotten most of the story by now, so...

These are rather cheap - just cost me $9.99 a month. Because I have a subscription and with that you get a credit each month, and I had about five credits. So, I have about fifty books to listen to, plus free podcasts, etc.

Am plodding my way through Remarkable Creatures - I don't get why people recommended it as delightful and funny, and a happy book? Right now, it's very depressing, no one is happy, all the characters are trapped, frustrated, angry and lonely, and it just keeps jumping points of view. I thought it would just be two points of view? But noooo, it's about four to date. It may be more. Each time I think it's done with character pov, it adds another one. (Reminds me of Eternity Station in that respect, also GRR Martin). And outside of Tova and the octopus, I'm not really interested in them, and want to go back to Tova and the octopus. I've decided that maybe Cameron is Tova's missing son, but that doesn't quite work, so maybe not.
Look, I don't need to read a book - to get frustrated, trapped, angry and lonely...or mundane. Escapism it's not. We'll see how long I stick with this.

I'd read the Faire Folk book - but it's bigger, and not an e-book, so not conducive to reading on subways.

1) The next day we were headed to Eugene by way of a stop at Silver Falls Park. This was our first bust of the trip, in that the falls required a walk to get to them. We had not found the entrance to the waterfall area easy to find either as we were looking for the wrong name. However the drive into the forest had been quite nice and we had time before check in at the hotel anyway.

Finding the hotel in Eugene proved a challenge due to one way streets, blocks and blocks of dividers preventing turns, and similar names, or streets that changed name on each side of the boulevard. When we finally arrived at our hotel (where even the entrance wasn't easy to spot, confusing our food deliverer as well as us!) we were amused by the painting in our room which seemed to echo the driving experience. Read more... )

2) When I returned to the room, M and I made some microwave popcorn and settled in to watch Captain America: Brave New World. My two takeaways were that Anthony Mackie did a good job as Sam, anchoring the film and giving it heart, as well as no doubt influencing Sam's perspective on the world. The second is that the overall plot mirrored Winter Soldier in many ways. I didn't mind that, as I thought that the changes both said something about our present time compared to CA:WS, and it also made both the similarities and differences between Steve and Sam stand out more clearly. Read more... )

3) After, we watched The Eternals, which was new to M as she was curious about the adamantium source in the sea in Captain America. I continue to think that it's a pity this film didn't do well. I liked the story, as I like using the MCU as a framework for different kinds of tales. I figured my friend would like it too as she's fond of origin myths. And she did, appreciating the variety of characters in it, even though this is also a sort of weakness in that we don't have time to explore them all properly.

It's also a shame that we probably won't have a follow up to either credit scene.

4) On the last day of the trip, M and I drove down to L.A. together. We passed a lot of nice sights during our crossing of the CA-152 West. Some were entertaining, such as all the garlic farms in Gilroy advertising things like garlic ice cream and garlic honey (also 10 avocados for $1!) Some were just pretty. One was the San Luis reservoir, which was huge. Read more... )

5) My week+ since the trip has been fairly occupied with catching up on things, dealing with the bed issue, and frankly just being tired. I thought it was interesting that both my friends took an extra day off work after their return than they'd planned. I had less to jump into than they did but felt so draggy my first day back I feared I'd managed to pick up a bug, despite consistent masking. But nope, just tired.

ZOMG what a day!!!

I was in a training this morning when around 10:30 am, my internet went out and didn't come back in 30 seconds the way it usually does. And my cable was out also. But Spectrum said there was no outage in my area, so it was a me problem. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And so I was in the middle of texting with a Spectrum chatbot (or maybe it was a real person?) when the cleaning ladies showed up but the bell wasn't working and then they called me and I didn't respond because I was in the middle of chatting with Spectrum (doing all the things I had already done, i.e., unplugging and re-plugging in the modem and router) with no success, but luckily I realized who was calling so I went and opened the door and they began their work and I went back to chatting with Spectrum.

The CSR/bot told me they would schedule the next open appointment and I was like sure, while thinking, "am I going to have to into the office for my meetings tomorrow? I need to be here when the tech comes but it probably won't be until Friday or Monday?" and then they texted me the appointment and it was for TODAY at NOON so of course I was like, YES, I WILL. TAKE IT. And then he showed up at 11:55 am!!! And told me there was a major outage in my area, so it was unlikely that he could do anything, but I was getting texts saying that the outage should be fixed by 1 pm. No, we mean 1:30 pm. No, we mean 2 pm. (It came back for me around 1 pm.) And finally at 4:05 pm a text saying the outage was over.

Meanwhile, yesterday, we were supposed to be sending materials out for a meeting tomorrow, but I hadn't received them by 5 pm yesterday, and I hadn't received them by 9 am this morning, and while I was in training and then offline, my boss was poking the CFO who was like, "we don't have them, should we cancel?" so my boss was texting me like, "We should cancel!!!" and I was like, that's fine but we can't reschedule for next week since the board members are not available, and then the board meeting is the week after, so we would need to get approval by unanimous written consent. But then the CFO is like, "I'm calling you!" and I'm like, "I have no internet, I can't get into any files, please don't!" But she was already calling, so I spoke with her and she was like, "We got the documents! I'm reviewing them! I will let you know when it's ok to send!" and I was like ok.

A little while after that, my service had returned and I discovered another committee member had sent out an invite to a meeting on Friday with incorrect information while trying to accept the correct invite for Friday's meeting? I don't even know, but it didn't replace the correct invite on anyone's calendars, so I just declined it. Then she emailed saying she was now getting all these RSVPs and I was like, "can you cancel it? It shouldn't affect the correct invitation, which I will then forward to you." So she cancelled it, but it looked to other people like the meeting was cancelled, even though the correct invitation remained on their calendars. So I had to send a teams message internally and an email externally to explain to everyone that the meeting was not cancelled, it was just a technological glitch of some sort. Idek.

I ate breakfast after the cable guy left, so I didn't eat lunch, and at around 3:30 I was like, "the CFO still hasn't given me the go-ahead to send this out - they are going to complain about getting a complicated set of documents less than 24 hours ahead of the meeting!" to my boss and then the email telling me the materials were good to go dropped into my inbox, so I was able to send them out.

Then while I was trying to catch up on email, a nasty looking bee (hornet? wasp?) started hovering around my window, and as you may recall, I had problems with them somehow getting into my apartment last summer, so I immediately slammed down the window and put the AC on, even though it was comfortable enough with the fan with the window open. I appreciate bees, but not in my living room! Especially not ones that look mean.

And then I read that Brian Wilson died. And Sly Stone died earlier this week. And I thought that was sad. #legends only #RIP

Gene Hackman and Al Pacino are a pair of tramps in 1973's Scarecrow, a film that largely rides on their performances. Well, Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography is gorgeous but, despite a few interesting ideas, the film never quite wholly satisfies.

Hackman was a big guy and it seems most of his roles didn't really take advantage of it. Here, he plays an ex-con named Max, wandering the roads with a pipe dream about opening a car wash. He seems like pleasant enough company but slowly you start to realise that, in most conversations, he's trying to start a fight, something his powerful physique allows him to successfully do. The film gets its title from a sort of joke Pacino's character, Francis, tells him about how crows aren't afraid of scarecrows--they actually find them quite funny and so do the farmers the favour of leaving their crops alone in exchange for the entertainment. Max laughs in what seems like appreciation before remarking on what a stupid idea it is. Francis has the deer in headlights look of someone who's not used to the twists in conversation a compulsive bully might employ.

The two are an effective double act; Max always spoiling for a fight and Francis persisting in his friendliness. The two get brief jobs and meet women on their journey from California to Pittsburgh, most memorably a horny southern woman called Frenchy (Ann Wedgeworth).

The climax of the film calls for an intense performance from Pacino, and he rises to the occasion. There's kind of a Man Who Shot Liberty Valance spirit to the film about the value of peace and human connexion in a world that seems to inevitably demand violence.

Scarecrow is available on The Criterion Channel this month as part of a celebration of the late Gene Hackman.
